The Chang'e 5-T1, Chinese spacecraft has taken a picture of the Earth from the far side of the Moon.
Images like these really show the fragility of our planet and human life. It also shows the need for spreading our species out into the solar system. What do you think people would make of this image, if in 30 years time, they could also see the first Lunar City on the Moon, in contrast to the Earth.
Newscientist reports on Chinese efforts to launch a probe to the moon, which launched on the 23rd October, and return it to Earth.
The Chang'e 5-T1 mission will fly around the back of the moon and return to Earth, the mission should take 8 days, which means it should have returned yesterday, if all goes to plan. This mission is a forerunner to a future mission in 2017 where the CNSA (Chinese National Space Administration) will launch a lander that will collect 2 kilograms of soil and rock from the surface of the moon. This is a chance for the CNSA to test the heat shield on the return vehicle.
The spacecraft is also going to be carrying bacterial and plant samples to see what happens when exposed to radiation from beyond low Earth orbit.
